Taster Session – Introduction to Paddlesport
–
13 June 2026
Whether you’ve never paddled before or you’ve had a go on holiday and want to learn properly, this taster session is a great place to start. Choose from kayak, canoe, or stand-up paddleboard (SUP) or try more than one if you’d like to explore what suits you.
Over around two hours you’ll get a proper, structured introduction in a small group with qualified instructors throughout. By the end you’ll have the basics under your belt, feel comfortable on the water, and have a clear idea of where to go next.
Paddle UK Start Award
This session is run against the Paddle UK Start Award syllabus, the entry-level personal performance award from the UK’s national paddlesport governing body. Completing the session means you’ll leave with a nationally recognised certificate.
The Start Award covers:
• Clothing and equipment – understanding what you’re wearing, why, and how to fit it correctly
• Getting in and out of your chosen craft safely
• Basic boat or board control – moving forward, stopping, and turning
• Capsize awareness and what to do if you end up in the water
• A short independent paddle to demonstrate what you’ve learned
The award is available in kayak, canoe, or stand-up paddleboard. You choose your craft on the day, or let us know in advance if you have a preference.
What’s included
All equipment is provided – craft, paddle, buoyancy aid, and helmet. You just need to arrive in clothes you’re happy to get wet and suitable footwear.
What to bring
• Clothes you’re happy to get wet (thermals or a wetsuit layer work well in cooler months – avoid cotton)
• Old trainers, water shoes, or wellies
• A change of clothes and a towel for afterwards
• A drink and a snack
Who is it for?
Complete beginners and anyone with very limited experience. Suitable for adults and young people aged 12 and over. Under-16s must be accompanied by a participating adult.
