About West Yorkshire Canoe Club

Our Story

West Yorkshire Canoe Club began seventy years ago with a group of enthusiasts meeting in a back garden to build boats. What started as informal gatherings has grown into a thriving community that has endured for seven decades, serving as a beacon for anyone drawn to the water.

Our Legacy

Over the years, we’ve achieved remarkable success at competitive levels. Our members have represented Great Britain in canoe polo, slalom, and whitewater racing, and we’ve even had a two-time Adidas Sickline champion among our ranks.

For over 50 years, we proudly ran the West Tanfield Slalom—one of the most respected and beloved events on the circuit, built on the dedication of countless volunteers who became the backbone of competitive slalom in the region.

Our Community

West Yorkshire Canoe Club is more than a sports club—we’re a keeper of traditions, a guardian of skills, and a nurturing ground for lifelong passions. We’re particularly proud of our multi-generational membership, with founding and early members now seeing their children and grandchildren discover the magic of the water.

While the sport has evolved tremendously—embracing new disciplines and welcoming paddleboarders alongside traditional canoeists and kayakers—at our core we remain the same: a group of people united by our love of water and our commitment to sharing that passion with others.

Today

Whether you’re a nervous beginner finding confidence or an experienced paddler honing your skills, every member helps weave the rich tapestry of our club’s story. From weekend warriors to competitive racers, from tentative newcomers to seasoned instructors—everyone makes their mark on our shared journey.
